Kaneohe, HI – The ART U pitching staff threw seven scoreless innings in Saturday's twinbill against Hawaii Pacific, but the Sea Warriors hit hard when they did rally and ended up taking both sides, 9-0 and 3-0. Early offense kept HPU in the driver's seat for all of game one, then
Jill Johnson battled Kristen Caskey in a pitchers' duel for four innings before a three-run rally got Hawaii Pacific its second victory out at Howard A. Okita Field after a two-hour delay due to wet field conditions.
In the first inning of the opening contest, HPU used a throwing error to start its push, adding an RBI double and later three RBI singles. The final of five runs came in on a bases-loaded walk and ART U found itself in an early hole despite only allowing one earned run in the first.
Alexa Peters and the Knights' defense kept Hawaii Pacific quiet in the second, but the Sea Warriors then scored four more times in the third to take a 9-0 lead. Although
Jasmine Dickenson singled twice in her two at-bats, the Academy of Art offense wasn't able to get anything going against Chandell Dacosin (6-2) who finished with a complete 5.0 innings pitched and the shutout.
Game two started with the teams combining for eight consecutive outs before a walk to
Kamyle Glover made her the first base-runner. Johnson did not allow a hit in her first two frames despite allowing a runner to reach third on a walk, steal, and wild pitch in the second. The Sea Warriors doubled in the third, but it did not faze the junior who continued rolling.
In the fourth,
Elyse Cordova got into scoring position, but Johnson's dueler Kristen Caskey (4-9) managed to leave the runner stranded. Johnson pitched through a hit and an error in the fourth, but in the fifth, HPU made a move. A single and a RBI double got one in before a two-run error led to a 3-0 margin.
From that point, ART U's best chance came in the sixth when Cordova laid down a bunt single and eventually made it to third on a muffed throw, but an inning-ending double play prevented her run from counting and Hawaii Pacific prevailed 3-0.
For ART U (4-12, 2-4 PacWest), Dickenson had hits in both games and now sports a four-game hitting streak which began in Hawaii. Cordova had her fifth multi-hit game of the year with a 2-for-3 second contest and Johnson turned in her fourth quality start to date with three runs allowed on five hits through 6.0 innings pitched.
Hawaii Pacific (10-12, 10-10 PacWest) was led by Dorian Acierto who went 3-for-6 with four RBIs and three runs scored. Caskey picked up the win in game two after pitching 7.0 scoreless innings with three hits allowed.
The Urban Knights again matchup with the Sea Warriors for a doubleheader on Sunday, Mar. 16 beginning at 12:00 PM HST (3:00 PM PST). Check
