Women's Golf Moves Up In Otter Invite Finale

2014 Cal State Monterey Bay Otter Invitational

Seaside, CA – Led by a top 10 finish from Deanna Tyndall, Urban Knights Women's Golf rose from its day one placement among the 15 teams competing at the Otter Invitational. Academy of Art shaved six strokes off its opening round score, collectively shot a 2-under par, shifting them into eighth overall ahead of fellow Pacific West Conference opponent Point Loma.

Tyndall was one of four ART U golfers to improve upon her score from day one, delivering a 77 for a 155 overall. She moved up from 10th to eighth individually, a shade behind two from Agustana (SD) and in front of Sonoma State's top finisher. Crystal Wang offered a 79 on day two for a 157 in the tournament, locking her in a tie for 10th.

"I am really proud of how Deanna is playing," head coach Elaine Harris said. "She is consistently leading the team and being a leader."

Rounding out the Academy of Art five, Roxanne Matta took two strokes off her second round score for a 166 overall and joint possession of 38th place. Mariana Pazos and Melissa Genao both shot better second rounds to finish with a 171 and 174 respectively.

"Crystal put two good rounds of golf together and today had some great up and downs to shoot 79," Coach Harris said. "Roxanne, Melissa, and Mariana improved on their scores. Each of them hit good shots today, but I know they wanted to score better. I also know they will be able to improve for our next tournament.

As a team, ART U edged Point Loma by one stroke with its 646 cumulative total. Among the teams the Knights beat out were Incarnate Word, Angelo State, and Whitman College. Cal State East Bay topped Augstana (SD) for the team victory led by Andrea Castellanos' 148 (74-74).

The Urban Knights are next in action at the Sonoma State Spring Invitational at the Santa Rosa Golf & Country Club. Following SSU, ART U will head to Ewa Beach, Hawaii for the PacWest Conference Championship.
