Match Results

San Diego, CA --
After suffering their first loss of the spring season on Friday, the #13 Academy of Art University women's tennis team quickly rebounded and trounced Point Loma Nazarene University on their home turf, starting a new winning streak with a 9-0 win over the Sea Lions. The Urban Knights led after sweeping the three doubles matches, and used a trio of three-set victories in singles play to secure the win.

"The girls held their ground in doubles and that momentum carried over into singles," said head coach Beth Daub. "Being able to bounce back after the loss last night shows how much determination these girls have. They didn't let it affect them today and came out with the intensity we needed."

The road back to the win column began with doubles play, as Nina Gajdosikova & Daniela Amelunge Antelo beat Hope Penner & Regina von Koch 8-4. Lucia Zavarcikova & Jenny Johansson defeated Maika Adair & Hillary Ramage 9-7 in second singles, while Michelle Dandik Zaale teamed up with Annika Schneider to beat Sharon Reibstein & Preethika Venugopal 8-3.

Singles play was extremely spirited all the way around. It took Gajdosikova a win in the tiebreaker in her first set before she defeated Adair 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 in first singles, and Zavarcikova won her second singles match in three sets (6-3, 0-6, 10-7). Dandik Zaale also went three sets to defeat Penner (5-7, 6-1, 10-6) in the third slot, while Johansson also came back from a deficit to win in the sixth spot over Kirsty Mountain (2-6, 6-4, 10-4). ART U's Schneider in fourth (6-1, 6-1) and Amelunge Antelo in fifth (6-0, 6-0) both cruised to victories over their opponents to complete the sweep.

"This was a big win for us, especially for the mental game going Into another tough match tomorrow," said Daub. "All around was a strong match for us and we are looking to take that into our next match."

Academy of Art will be back on the court one more time to complete their tough road trip, and will have a chance to make it a winning one as they take on #17 UC San Diego tomorrow afternoon.
