2014 All-Pacific West Conference Women's Tennis Teams Newport Beach, CA -- Following up on their best season in program history, the Academy of Art University women's tennis team took home a ton of hardware, as the Postseason All-PacWest teams were announced on Thursday. The Urban Knights had three singles players earn postseason awards, as well as one of their doubles teams, as the Knights were recognized for their strong play in 2014.
"Our girls worked very hard in one of the best conferences in the country, and they deserve to be recognized for what they did this year," said head coach Beth Daub. "We finished third as a team against a very tough slate of schools in the PacWest and to be honored among them is very something we worked for all year long."
The doubles team of
Nina Gajdosikova &
Daniela Amelunge Antelo took home Second Team All-PacWest honors after a 12-9 season in the top doubles spot, facing the #1 team from every other school that they faced and highlighted by a pair of wins over nationally ranked opponents and three wins over ranked opponents in the West Region.
Gajdosikova also received a nod on the Second Team All-PacWest team for her singles play after a 10-7 record in the first singles spot, beating #39-ranked Leora Hemmerich from Cal State Los Angeles and also picking up four wins against West Region ranked opponents. Both
Lucia Zavarcikova (9-8 in second singles) and
Michelle Dandik Zaale (12-8 between second and third) were named to the Third Team All-PacWest.
"I'm proud all four who were honored but don't want to overlook what the rest of the team did either," said Daub. "I'm looking forward to seeing all of their names on this list in the future as we continue to get better as a team."
BYU-Hawaii swept the individual awards, as Nannan "Dallas" Zhang won both Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year, with Min "Karen" Liu winning Freshman of the Year and head coach Dave Porter taking home Coach of the Year for the eighth straight season.
