Manoa, HI -- For the first time in program history, Academy of Art University Women's Tennis qualified for the NCAA postseason. The Urban Knights posted a 17-4 overall record en route to their West Regional appearance against Hawaii Pacific in early May.
Despite falling to the Sea Warriors 5-0, the Knights' second (Lucia Zavarcikova & Jenny Johansson) and third (Michelle Dandik Zaale & Annika Schneider) doubles teams finished the year combined 37-5 and joined the 12-9 record from their first doubles team (Nina Gajdosikova & Daniela Amelunge Antelo).
Facing #5-ranked HPU, #13-ranked Academy of Art University saw its third doubles team of Dandik Zaale and Schneider nearly pull off an upset, but they ended up falling to Lea Kruse-Utermann and Vivian Hansen in a long 9-7 battle. Two singles victories ultimately gave Hawaii Pacific the victory though it was not without valuable experience gained by ART U.
"The girls battled hard today the score doesn't reflect the matches that were played," said head coach Beth Daub. "HPU played a great match and their experience showed. I'm very proud of my girls and the season we have had.The future of this program is looking bright and can't wait to see what they can do. ART U tennis has had a fantastic 2014 season and their hard work has paid off."
Academy of Art wrapped up the 2014 year with their best winning percentage (17-4, .810) and highest national (#13) and regional (#3) rankings.Â
