Sveinsson, Tombach Help ART U Defeat CSUS

Box Score

San Francisco, CA — Senior captain Thorvaldur "Thobbi" Sveinsson and freshman Alexander Tombach both found the net Saturday for the Academy of Art University men's soccer team in a full team effort that resulted in a 2-1 victory for the Urban Knights over Cal State Stanislaus at Boxer Stadium.

The victory snapped a three-match losing streak for the Urban Knights (2-4). It also wrapped the team's non-conference schedule and gives ART U momentum from a victory heading into PacWest Conference play next week.

The Urban Knights played a man down for 77 1/2 minutes Saturday after freshman midfielder Alex Walsh was issued a red card in the 13th minute. ART U was already leading Cal State Stanislaus (2-3-1) 1-0 at the time and would later add a goal despite the Warriors having a man advantage.

Sveinsson made good on an errant header shot inside the box from junior Malcolm McLellan nine minutes into the game. McLellan attempted to head in a cross but instead sent it to Sveinsson's feet in the middle of the box. Sveinsson had an open shot from 15 yards away and tucked it low and left for the goal.

Tombach would put Academy of Art up 2-0 just before halftime when his shot from 20 yards out skipped past Cal State Stanislaus goalkeeper Clint Long. A concise triangle passing pattern on the attack started with senior midfielder Carlos Hernandez, who passed it to Frederik Nagel at the top of the box. Nagel then sent it over to the right to Tombach, who finished with a strong shot.

Cal State Stanislaus applied more pressure in the second half and finally broke through with a goal off a free kick. A foul was called on Sveinsson just outside the top of the box, giving the Warriors a free kick opportunity from 20 yards out. Jose Acosta lined a shot high and left to beat ART U goalkeeper Alejandro Escobedo, making it 2-1.

Cal State Stanislaus appeared to tie the game mere seconds later. After the reset from their previous goal, the Warriors came down the field and sent a rolling cross through the box from the right side that made it all the way to the left side and was kicked into the goal for a 2-2 score. But the line judge held his flag up for offsides and the goal was disallowed.

The teams played even for most of the match. Cal State Stanislaus won the shots category 14-13 and corner kicks 5-4. A physical match resulted in 34 fouls and six cards issued.

Academy of Art continues its four-match homestand with the beginning of PacWest Conference play at 11 a.m. Thursday at Crocker Amazon Park versus Hawaii Pacific.
