McLellan Nets PacWest Player of the Week Award

PacWest Players of the Week -- Sept. 8, 2014

11179Irvine, CA — Academy of Art University men's soccer junior midfielder Malcolm McLellan was named Pacific West Conference Co-Player of the Week Monday after a career performance in the opening week of the 2014 season.

McLellan tallied six points (2 goals, 2 assists) in two matches last week, helping the Urban Knights to a 1-1 week, including a dominating 4-0 victory over Cal State East Bay Saturday. In his first season with ART U last year McLellan made 17 starts in 18 appearances on defense but only posted one point (1 assist) during the season.

McLellan notched ART U's first goal of the season Thursday when he found himself alone at the top of the box with a loose ball coming right toward him following a free kick. With one swing of his left leg he buried the ball in the back of the net, beating Cal State San Bernardino goalkeeper Ivan Sanchez to the top left corner to cut the score to 2-1 in the 50th minute in what was eventually a 4-1 loss for ART U.

Saturday McLellan kept that momentum going as he had a career day with four points. McLellan assisted on the Knights' (1-1) first goal of the game in the 62nd minute and would make it 2-0 just 15 minutes later with his second goal of the year. He would later assist on the Knights' fourth and final goal to cap off the match.

Through the first week of the season McLellan is tied with Hawaii Pacific's Brais Garcia for the PacWest Conference lead in points with six. Garcia also earned PacWest Co-Player of the Week honors with McLellan after scoring a conference-best three goals during the week.
