SAN BRUNO, Calif. – Rainbow headbands throughout the crowd were the brightest colors on a foggy day out at Skyline College where Holy Names wound up defeating Academy of Art University 1-0 in extra time. Despite putting seven more shots on goal than their opponent, ART U fell to the Hawks on an unexpected goal on the verge of a second extra time period.
After warming up in their own tie-dye creations as a celebration of National Coming Out Day, the Urban Knights opened the match very much on the offensive. Shots by junior defender
Laura Mick and senior forward
Réa Laudat in the first 13 minutes set the tone, giving way to a quality attempt by sophomore midfielder
Aliya Salas in the 21st minute.

The chance for Salas and others by Laudat and sophomore midfielder
Laney Haviland followed similar patterns as ART U had a one-on-one situation, but could not convert. While sophomore goalkeeper
Maggie Alikpala-Wilson and the Knights' defense held HNU in check, both Haviland and freshman defender
Natalie Rhodes had scoring opportunities in the final five minutes that were saved.
A 12-3 Academy of Art shot advantage in the first half gave ART U momentum heading into the second period, but neither side was able to find the back of the net despite seven attempts apiece. In the first extra time period, Holy Names' Michelle Gonzalez became the hero after she crossed a ball in front of the goal line that deflected off a Knights defender and in for the golden goal.
Academy of Art takes just it second loss in conference of the year, moving to 4-6 overall and 3-2 in the PacWest. Four Urban Knights finished with two or more shots on goal each. In her first start of the year, Alikpala-Wilson allowed the lone goal with three saves in a complete 98:29 minutes.
Holy Names rises to 3-6 overall and 1-4 in PacWest play with the victory. For Gonzales, it was her first goal of the season and the team's first in its past three matches. Tiana Miyashiro earned the shutout with 11 saves through 98+ minutes in goal.
