Red Storm Top Knights In High-Scoring Match

SAN FRANCISCO – Academy of Art University women's soccer and Dixie State combined for five goals in a wild first half before the Red Storm added one more in the second period to win 4-2. Both senior forward Réa Laudat and junior defender Laura Mick were amid the offensive flurry for ART U out at City College of San Francisco on Saturday.

Neither side had settled into much of a rhythm following the opening kickoff when Laudat gave the Urban Knights a quick 1-0 lead in the fifth minute. Making a move to the outside, she came at a sharp angle from the corner of the goalie box and placed the ball into the net from 12 yards out. A mere 28 seconds later still in the fifth minute, Dixie State put together a combination after a corner kick with Aubri Detmer scoring from Tanner Montana.

12639DSU did not stop there as Darian McCloy found the back of the net in the 10th minute on a volley shot following a cross by Tori Washington. Sophomore goalkeeper Maggie Alikpala-Wilson stopped four more shots on frame before Academy of Art evened the score in the 38th minute on a breakaway goal by Mick. Laudat set up her teammate with a well-placed through-ball from midfield then Mick turned on her speed for a one-on-one with the goalkeeper before chipping the ball in.

The Red Storm would have the last laugh of the half, however, when McCloy scored her second goal of the day in the 40th minute. A Montana free kick skimmed off the head of an ART U defender and enabled McCloy to hit a shot from the left of the box.

Dixie State remained the aggressors in the second half and it was Alexis Torres who netted the team's fourth goal, a deep shot from straight on, in the 85th minute.  At the sound of the final horn, DSU found itself on top 4-2 for the win.

Now 4-8 overall and 3-4 in PacWest play, ART U was led by goals from Laudat and Mick as well as nine saves by Alikpala-Wilson in a complete 90 minutes. It was Laudat's second goal of the season and 13th in her career while Mick netted her second goal as an Urban Knight and first this season.

Dixie State improves to 7-5 overall and 5-3 in conference with the victory. Detmer, McCloy, and Torres accounted for the four goals while Tanner, Washington, and Rogers combined for four assists. Sarah Beecher picked up the win despite allowing two goals with three saves and deferring to Stacie Gubler in the second half.

Academy of Art has two more matches to come on its five-part homestand with Point Loma (Oct. 22 – Fairmont Field) and Azusa Pacific (Oct. 24 - CCSF) coming north next week.
