SAN FRANCISCO – Rather different than the high-scoring women's match preceding it, Saturday's Pacific West Conference men's soccer contest between Academy of Art and Dixie State ended 1-0 with the Red Storm on top.
Both sides attempted shots in the early going, but it was not until the 30th minute that either side had a chance on frame. Unfortunately for ART U, it was a header goal by the Red Storm's Frankie Mallek that came off a cross by Santiago Alejandro. Each team's midfielders were consistently pushed and the 1-0 DSU advantage held up through halftime.

One of the Urban Knights' best chances came off the head of junior forward
Justin Erhunmwunsee crashing toward the goal on a cross by senior defender
Malcolm McLellan right away 34 seconds into the second half. After Dixie State put a shot on frame in the 48th minute, the Academy of Art defense held their opponent to a zero shots on goal for the remainder of the period, but the DSU back line prevented a score despite nine shots, earning the 1-0 win.
The loss puts the Knights' record at 5-5-2 overall and 3-3-1 in conference play. Academy of Art had four different players register shots on goal and freshman goalkeeper
Kevin Mendez finished with just a single save with the lone goal allowed in a complete 90 minutes.
Remaining atop the PacWest standings, Dixie State is now 8-1-2 overall and 6-0-2 in the conference. Mallek's third goal of the season highlighted the match for DSU while goalie Bradley Trella notched the shutout with four saves.
As the ART U homestand continues, Point Loma (Oct. 22, Fairmont Field) and Azusa Pacific (Oct. 24, CCSF) journey to the Bay Area to face the Knights.
