Crystal Wang and
Roxanne Matta helped ART U create separation from No. 33 Chico State out at Foxtail Golf Club on Tuesday.
Wang emerged as the Urban Knights' leader, finishing tied for fifth with a 153 (79-74). Coming into the day 13th, she shot her best round of the fall season and rose eight spots to join Point Loma's Michelle Picca, the tournament leader after the first round.
Making an impressive 16-place improvement from round one, Matta had her best round of the fall season with a 74 to make up her 155 (81-74). She entered a four-way tie for ninth, joining sophomore
Shu-lin Lin who posted a 155 by way of a 77 (+5) and 78 (+6). Freshman
Sabrina Virtusio was one stroke behind her teammates, taking home a 156 (78-78) and a tie for 13th place.
"One of the patterns of the fall was that every player stepped up to lead this team," said head coach Elaine Harris. "I continue to be proud of each of players' presence on the course and the pride each player has for the team. I look forward to the offseason to work on the mental game and focus on the art each player loves."By a six-stroke margin, Sonoma State took the team championship of their own tournament thanks in part to individual champion Sarah Rotter who shot a 146 (74-72). The Urban Knights posted a combined score of 618 (314-304), leading Chico State, Western Washington, and Point Loma among others.
Academy of Art University women's golf will return to action this spring for Point Loma's Super San Diego Women's Golf Championship on Feb. 8-9.
