SAN RAFAEL, Calif.- Saturday's rivalry match between ART U (now 7-7-2, 5-5-1 PacWest) and Dominican University's (now 2-14-0, 2-9-0 PacWest) men's soccer teams did not disappoint; it was brimming with flared tempers, a big mistake, and ultimately, and incredible come-from-behind victory for the Urban Knights.
Â
The first 45 minutes featured two teams who matched each other shot for shot and ended the first half tied 0-0 (seven shots apiece). The second half was a different story, however.Â
In the 83rd minute, the Penguins' junior defender Roberto Macias came through with the game's first goal. After the goal, Dominican University went on the defensive and it looked as if they had the game in hand. In the 88th minute however, ART U was granted a corner kick which landed right in the middle of players from both sides. In the middle of the scrum, the ball was jostled around and the Penguins kicked it into their net for an own goal, tying the game at 1-1.
Â
The game then moved to overtime where each team played with a sense of renewed energy. For 9:55 the battle continued. Both sides shared the possession evenly and each had a shot on goal. But with five seconds left on the clock, Dominican University had a moment of déjà vu and scored on themselves yet again, giving the Academy of Art a 2-1 victory.
Â
After the game, head coach
Mike Keller spoke of his team's ability to come from behind as a unit:
"The comeback showed a lot of heart which is really nice to see…We had some really great team play and guys contributing in different ways. Seniors are really stepping up and young guys are developing and putting in great effort plays. I'd really like to see that continue and have it fused in our team culture."
