SAN FRANCISCO – It was like déjà vu Friday afternoon inside Kezar Pavilion as Academy of Art University volleyball overthrew California Baptist, second in the Pacific West Conference standings, with an inspired 3-1 (25-21, 25-22, 22-25, 25-16) victory. When the Lancers had faced the Urban Knights in the Bay Area
last September, ART U came out 3-2 winners and, on this occasion, contributions from every player earned Academy of Art the win once again.
Winning five of the match's first seven points, the Knights showed they were ready to take control early. Though CBU rallied back and eventually came to within one point on multiple occasions, ART U refused to relinquish its lead. A kill by sophomore middle blocker
Amorelle Applin kept the Lancers at bay before sophomore outside hitter
Bailey Soolsma slammed three of the final four points to win 25-21.
California Baptist took an early 6-2 advantage in the second set, but later the Knights not only matched their opponent, but took a 19-16 lead on a 9-2 surge the featured putaways from Soolsma, junior outside hitter
Melissa Brum, and freshman outside hitter
Stine Raben. From 21-21, senior setter
Rachael Smith found Brum for three of four kills and ART U rose ahead 2-0 with a 25-22 second set victory.
Both sides went on early runs in the third set, but a 6-0 CBU push late threatened to prevent the Knights' sweep. Despite being down 23-18, Academy of Art rattled off four straight points to come within a single score at 23-22. However, the Lancers were able to claim a 25-22 victory and force a fourth set.
After scoring the first four points of the fourth set and taking six of the first seven, ART U refused to surrender any momentum. Two separate 4-0 runs midway through the game established a 23-14 advantage for the home team then kills by Raben and Brum finished off the 3-1 victory.
The Urban Knights improve to 8-17 overall and 4-13 in PacWest play with the win. Smith had her second consecutive double-double with 48 assists and 14 digs while setting up the tandem of Brum and Raben who contributed 14 kills apiece. Soolsma offered 12 kills and a career-high 11 digs for the first double-double of her career. Junior libero
Kabrina Speakman added a match-high 19 digs as well.
California Baptist drops to 19-7 overall and 12-6 in conference play despite team-highs of 14 kills and 14 digs from Hackett. The Lancers were held to a .201 hitting percentage, the lowest mark in their past 12 matches.
Academy of Art turns around and plays host to Azusa Pacific tomorrow back inside Kezar Pavilion at 1 p.m.
