Pioneers Outlast Knights In Overtime 73-69

HAYWARD, Calif. – Playing its fifth game in eight days, Academy of Art University women's basketball left it all on the court Saturday, battling into overtime with CCAA/PacWest Thanksgiving Shootout host Cal State East Bay. The Urban Knights, who had been down by as many as 13 points, fought all the way back to get into a fifth period where the Pioneers managed to edge ART U 73-69 thanks to free throws down the stretch and a total of 11 3-pointers made.

Long range success helped CSUEB build a five-point lead on multiple occasions in the first period, but senior guard Zoie Sheng's free throws made it only 16-13 at the conclusion of the quarter. A 6-2 Pioneers burst was stopped by the triple from senior guard Regina Camera, however, back-to-back triples by Cal State East Bay pushed their margin to double digits.

Six of the final nine points were scored by Academy of Art including a Sheng jumper with three seconds left to keep the Pioneers lead at single digits, 33-24, heading into halftime. Senior guard Sha'Nice Storey opened the second half with a 3-pointer and free throws from senior guard Jasmin Guinn shortened the gap down to two points midway through the third.

Scoring in the final minute for her third consecutive quarter, Sheng's layup made it 45-39 CSUEB heading into the fourth. There, the Knights had the Pioneers' advantage down to just one point of four different occasions and, after Sheng hit a jumper in the paint with 36 seconds left, ART U had a chance to take a late lead with Sheng at the free throw line. She would split the pair and tie the game at 61-61. Both teams then committed turnovers in the waning seconds and the game headed to overtime.

In the extra period, Storey once again started Academy of Art off with a shot from distance, but a 6-0 run was CSUEB's response as fouls continued to send the Pioneers to the free throw line. Tied once again at 67-67, Cal State East Bay connected on a triple of their own with one minute and 16 seconds left and never looked back, knocking down three of their final four free throws to pull out the 73-69 overtime victory.

Now 5-5 through their first 10 games, the Urban Knights were led by a game-high 23 points from Sheng including a 7-for-13 evening from the field and 8-for-10 performance from the foul line in 43 minutes of work. Camera filled up the stat sheet with 16 points, six assists, and five rebounds while Storey added 11 points including three 3-pointers. Guinn finished with nine points and team-high seven rebounds.

For Cal State East Bay (4-2), Laci Effenberger contributed 23 points (7-for-18 from long range) and Tori Breshers put up 15 points with seven rebounds.

With its non-conference schedule complete, ART U now turns its attention to Pacific West Conference play beginning 1 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 5 back at Notre Dame de Namur.

"From the non-conference schedule, our team has gained the ability to fight in many different situations, overcome adversity in many ways, and just how to stay together and grind towards the common goal," said head coach LaNay Larson.
