SAN FRANCISCO – Although Chaminade managed to outlast Academy of Art University volleyball in a 3-0 (27-25, 29-27, 25-18) final, it was nonetheless a historic night inside Kezar Pavilion on Thursday as junior outside hitter
Melissa Brum became the second Urban Knight to achieve 1,000 career kills.
After the Silverswords opened the match on a 10-4 run, ART U promptly fought back with five unanswered points including a pair of kills by sophomore outside hitter
Bailey Soolsma to erase the deficit. Two kills came off the hand of Brum in a 5-0 burst that followed to give the Urban Knights a 15-12 lead. As the set see-sawed back and forth, Chaminade went on an 8-2 run, but five of seven points by Academy of Art knotted the teams at 24-24. Back-to-back putaways by Keani Passi ended up giving the Swords the 27-25 result.
The second set followed a similar trend as the first with CUH grabbing a 10-5 lead, but this time the visitors pushed a 17-11 advantage and appeared to be in control. That was until six unanswered points by ART U including a kill by freshman outside hitter
Sydney Koehler tied things up 18-18. Brum's 1,000th career kill came at the start of the second set, but it was not until her three kills late that Academy of Art gained a 24-21 chance at set point. Unfortunately, Chaminade fended off two set points while scoring four in a row to gain momentum for a 29-27 win.
Following the intermission, both sides settled into a close battle in the third game. The Silverswords turned a 13-11 lead into 17-12 and while a block by Soolsma and sophomore middle blocker
Amorelle Applin shortened the margin to two (18-16), seven of the next nine points were scored by Chaminade. That run closed the set 25-18 and gave CUH the victory.
Academy of Art is now 6-17 overall and 2-13 in PacWest play. Brum's 1,000 kill milestone came early in the second set as she went on to log her eighth double-double of the season with 17 kills and 17 digs. The junior outside hitter now has 1,010 kills in her career, second to Dan Yang's 1,313 total as the program's record-holder.
Chaminade improves to 16-7 overall and 9-6 in conference with the win. Passi led the way with a team-high 16 kills and 13 digs.
The Urban Knights will return to Kezar Pavilion this Saturday, Nov. 7 to host Hawaii Pacific in a rematch from their Sept. 25 meeting in Hawaii. First serve is set for 5 p.m.
