#9 Women's Tennis Earns All-PacWest Awards

2015 All-PacWest Women's Tennis Awards Release -- May 1, 2015

IRVINE, Calif. —
Success continued Friday for the No. 9 Academy of Art University women's tennis team as five players, including three singles players and two doubles teams, were named to the All-Pacific West Conference team, as announced by the conference.

Senior Nina Gajdosikova was the Urban Knights' (13-5) top award winner, being named All-PacWest first team in both singles and doubles. She played No. 1 singles all spring for the Urban Knights, going 8-4. She was ranked No. 23 in the nation in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association national rankings.

Junior Annika Schneider joined Gajdosikova on the doubles first team, pairing with her to go 7-1 at No. 1 doubles during the dual season. The pair was ranked No. 19 nationally in the most recent rankings.

Also receiving All-PacWest honors were juniors Michelle Dandik Zaale and Lucia Zavarcikova. Both were named to the All-PacWest second team. Dandik led the Urban Knights with a 9-3 singles record in the spring, played mostly at No. 3 where she went 7-2. Zavarcikova was 7-4 at No. 2 singles and won a key match in the PacWest Championship Tournament semifinals that vaulted ART U into the championship match.

Zavarcikova teamed with senior Jenny Johansson to be named to the All-PacWest doubles third team. The duo was 4-1 at No. 2 doubles in duals, including 1-1 against regionally ranked teams.

BYU-Hawaii led the way in All-PacWest Women's Tennis honors. The Seasiders won three singles, two doubles and two individual awards. Dallas Zhang repeated as the PacWest Player of the Year. A first-team All-PacWest selection in both singles and doubles again, Zhang went 16-2 in singles and 20-3 in doubles on the season. Dave Porter was named the PacWest Coach of the Year for the eighth-consecutive time. He guided the Seasiders to a 30-1 record, their 16th season with one loss or less since becoming Division II in 1999, and ninth-consecutive PacWest Championship title.

Hawai'i Pacific earned the other two individual awards with PacWest Newcomer of the Year Nicole Hoynaski and PacWest Freshman of the Year Kristyna Hancarova.

The PacWest tennis awards and teams are based on a combination of coach voting and national rankings. The individual player and coach awards are nominated and selected by the PacWest coaches. The All-PacWest teams are based on the ITA West Region rankings released prior to the NCAA Championship (April 22).
