NCAA Division II Women's Golf Championship 2nd Round ResultsÂ
ALLENDALE, Mich. — Thursday's second round of the NCAA Division II Women's Golf Championship was not easy for anyone, but Academy of Art University sophomore
Crystal Wang kept pace with the pack to stay in the top-20 at The Meadows Golf Course.
Â
Nearly half the field (31 of 71 golfers) shot the same or higher Thursday from Wednesday's first round, including six of the top-12 players. Wang shot an eight-over 80 in the second round to move to 12-over for the tournament and sit in a four-way tie for 18th place. She is three strokes from the top-10 and six strokes from the top-five.
Â
She only lost three strokes on the lead, however, trailing new tournament leader Brenna Moore of Midwestern State by nine strokes. Moore shared the West Regional title with Wang last week. First round leader Madison Lellyo went from shooting a two-under par 70 on Wednesday to a 78 on Thursday, dropping her to second place.
Â
Wang played to seven-over on the front nine, double bogeying her first hole and logging four straight bogeys on the fifth through eighth holes. But just like in Wednesday's opening round, she strung together a stretch of consistency on the back nine. Beginning with the ninth hole, Wang collected seven straight pars or birdies with a birdie on the par-four 12th.
Â
"It was a tough start to the day for Crystal," said Academy of Art head coach
Elaine Harris. "However, after the eighth hole, Crystal started hitting more greens and getting up and down. This tournament is only half way through and I am looking forward to watching Crystal compete the next two days."
Â
Wang is scheduled to tee off in Friday's third round with the first group of individuals on the first hole at 8:30 a.m. EDT. Forecasts call for rain throughout the early morning hours and thunderstorms with 55 degrees Fahrenheit temperatures and 11 mph winds at 8 a.m.
