Walsh's OT Winner Completes ART U Comeback

HAYWARD, Calif. —Sophomore forward Alex Walsh's first career goal could not have come at a better time. Walsh punched home a golden goal 90 seconds into overtime Saturday to lift the Academy of Art University men's soccer team over Cal State East Bay in a thrilling 2-1 comeback win on the road at Pioneer Stadium.

Senior midfielder Kristof Urbanyi brought the ball down field and chipped it over the crowd into the box, finding the right foot of Walsh who punched it into the upper right corner from 12 yards out for the sudden victory. It was Urbanyi's first assist of the season and fifth point (2 goals, 1 assist) in the year's first two games. Walsh tallied five assists in his rookie season of 2014 but did not find the back of the net until Saturday.

The Urban Knights (1-1) managed to score two unanswered goals for the comeback win after trailing 1-0 20 minutes into the game. Cal State East Bay (1-1) led in shots 21-8 (13-3 in the second half) and had an 11-2 advantage in corner kicks, but the ART U defense held strong throughout. Freshman goalkeeper Kevin Mendez earned his first career victory with seven saves.

Redshirt freshman midfielder Nick Santhiago also scored his first career goal in just his second career appearance. Santhiago tied the game at 1-1 right before halftime with a goal in the 40th minute. Senior defender Runar Gudbjartsson tapped a through-ball to Santhiago, who chipped it over a charging CSUEB goalkeeper for the score.

Cal State East Bay struck first with a goal from Duke Driggs in the 20th minute. Driggs found a loose ball in the box from teammate Chris Gaitan and buried it from 10 yards out for a 1-0 Pioneers lead. Gaitan and Marco Neves led the Pioneers with five shots each.

The Urban Knights next return home to host the first Kezar Classic beginning Thursday at Kezar Stadium.
