KANEOHE, Hawaii – Academy of Art University volleyball's Hawaii roadtrip concluded late Monday night with a sweep at the hands of Hawaii Pacific inside Saint Andrew's Priory. The Urban Knights were just points away from taking sets two and three, but the Sharks answered the call with key kills late for the 3-0 sweep (25-11, 25-21, 25-23).
A 5-0 HPU run relatively early in the first set was countered by three unanswered points from ART U and a 13-10 score. However, it was then that Hawaii Pacific proceeded to unleash an 11-point run all the way to set point and soon a 25-11 victory.
In the second set, the teams traded 4-0 runs en route to HPU's 10-9 lead and would remain separated by just a single point at 20-19 after redshirt freshman outside hitter
Ema Causevic posted one of her four kills in the frame. Though the Knights continued to fight, a 5-2 push ensued for the home team and they went on to win 25-21 for a 2-0 advantage.
Set three ended up being the closest of all down the stretch despite an 8-1 Sharks run that appeared to seal the win. Instead, offense from senior outside hitter
Melissa Brum, redshirt sophomore middle blocker
Safua Elisaia, and Causevic helped key a 12-3 response that forced a 22-22 tie. ART U's momentum just couldn't hold thereafter as kills by three different Sharks concluded the set 25-23 in HPU's favor and gave them the 3-0 sweep.
Academy of Art moves to 5-12 overall and 3-5 in conference play. Causevic posted a team-high nine kills with seven digs while Brum contributed eight kills and Elisaia contributed six kills along with three block assists and two block solos. Sophomore setter
Alana Lucas and freshman setter
Lilika Teu were responsible for 12 and 11 assists respectively.
Hawaii Pacific rises to 9-7 overall and gains ground on four teams atop the PacWest standings with a 5-2 record in conference. Reigning Sports Imports/AVCA DII National Player of the Week Pomai Recca finished the night with a match-high 12 kills and nine digs while Alison McCollum added 11 kills on a .714 hitting percentage.
With its Hawaii roadtrip complete, ART U returns home for its next two matches on Saturday, Oct. 15 at 3 p.m. (Notre Dame de Namur) and Thursday, Oct. 20 at 7:30 p.m. (Holy Names).
