Women's Hoops Falls To Clan In Home Opener

SAN FRANCISCO – Despite junior forward Helena Orts' first double-double as an Urban Knight, Academy of Art University women's basketball could not recover from an early deficit to Simon Fraser in ART U's first home game of the year on Wednesday. The Knights bounced back to shoot 44 percent from the field in the second half, but The Clan maintained a double-digit lead from halftime to a 76-51 final inside Kezar Pavilion.

Though SFU opened the game on a 16-3 run, Academy of Art began to find its rhythm in the second quarter. Fastbreak layups by junior guard Hayley Pryor and senior guard Alana Simon got the Knights started and a 3-pointer by junior guard Jazzlyn Brewster late in the first half kept The Clan's lead at a manageable distance.

Senior forward Pre'Franz Dominick converted two layups in the first two minutes of the second half yet Simon Fraser also began breaking out of an early shooting slump and led 40-20 midway through the third quarter. Junior guard Rodericka Ware put in five quick points in 30 seconds, but an 18-6 run by the visitors had the margin at 27 points heading to the fourth.

Orts, who had been aggressive rebounding the basketball throughout, showed chemistry with her teammates after scoring back-to-back layups to start the final quarter. SFU would not let the differential drop under 20 points the rest of the way, winning 76-51 in the end.

Academy of Art drops to 0-4 on the year, but still got 10 points and 12 rebounds from Orts, nine points by Ware, and eight points apiece from Brewster and Dominick.

Simon Fraser improves to 5-1 overall after they topped Dominican the previous night. Ellen Kett led the way for The Clan, totaling 15 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists in 34 minutes.

ART U now has two days off from competition before Cal State East Bay's Thanksgiving Shootout which will see the Knights face Humboldt State (Nov. 26 at 2 p.m.) and the host Pioneers (Nov. 27 at 4 p.m.).
