SAN DIEGO – Academy of Art University volleyball remained resilient Saturday inside Golden Gymnasium, fighting off a total of eight set points (six in the first set), but ultimately Point Loma held on to win 3-0 (28-26, 25-22, 25-20) in the Pacific West Conference matchup that completed the Urban Knights' tour of Southern California.
Multiple kills by junior middle blocker
Margaret Winkler during ART U's 7-2 match-opening run, but a 5-0 Sea Lions response promptly erased the margin. The home team later used a 6-1 push to force the first of what would be seven set points. Academy of Art resiliently stayed alive through six of those, utilizing clutch blocks by Winkler, redshirt freshman outside hitter
Ema Causevic, and junior middle blocker
Bailey Soolsma. Up 26-25, ART U had a chance to take the set up 26-25, but PLNU's last gasp earned them a 28-26 win in the end.
Five unanswered points (including two service aces by senior outside hitter
Melissa Brum) gave way to a 7-2 ART U start to the second set, but Point Loma worked its way back to a 12-12 tie. Eight ties ensued before a late push by the Sea Lions from 20-20. The Knights again fought off two more set points before the 25-22 final result.
The teams traded 5-0 runs before a 10-10 score in the third set from which PLNU pushed ahead with four of the next five points. That momentum shift proved to be enough as the Sea Lions never conceded their lead despite the beginning of an ART U comeback to 23-20. In the end, Point Loma completed the sweep with a 25-20 victory in the final set.
Academy of Art drops to 6-18 overall and 4-11 in PacWest action following its final extended roadtrip of the year. Winkler totaled 10 kills and just one error for a match-high .643 hitting percentage while Brum also posted 10 kills and five digs (she needs four more to set the program's career digs record). Soolsma added seven kills, sophomore setter
Alana Lucas dealt out 27 assists, and senior libero
Kabrina Speakman amassed a team-high 11 digs.
The win elevates Point Loma to 9-15 overall and 7-8 in conference. Brianna Sizemore finished with a match-high 13 kills to go with eight digs and four service aces.
ART U's penultimate road match comes next with a trip down the Peninsula to Belmont for a rematch with Notre Dame de Namur on Nov. 10. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
