Women's Basketball Wins OT Thriller At PLNU

SAN DIEGO – Down by 19 points late in the third quarter to Point Loma on Monday, Academy of Art University women's basketball proved it could never be counted out. The Urban Knights proceeded to flip the script in that moment, surging back with an 18-3 run over the next five minutes of game action and eventually forced overtime. The extra period belonged to ART U unquestionably as the Golden Gym visitors rattled off 10 unanswered to start and went on to win 90-82.

"I'm very proud of my kids for fighting back from a such a big deficit," said head coach LaNay Larson. "It took a ton of effort and focus and they continued to fight all the way through overtime. I thought it showed a lot of character and they were intent on showing what kind of team they are during that stretch."

Academy of Art showed its potential to rally early, responding to an initial deficit with a 12-0 run highlighted by three consecutive 3-pointers made by three different Knights. Senior guard Sha'Nice Storey sparked the movement then senior guard Regina Camera and Jasmin Guinn followed suit. Though ART U led by nine in the first quarter, their advantage was just one by its end after the Sea Lions closed on a 10-2 run.

Simply put, the second quarter was a dogfight. Minutes in, Storey completed three-point play then Camera found her for three, however, PLNU seemed to have an answer each and every time the Knights tried to reestablish their previous margin. Point Loma went as far as to shift the momentum with a 12-1 push to take a 42-32 halftime lead.

The Sea Lions continued to pour it on in the third quarter, upping the difference to 17 points early then 19 with one minute and 40 seconds to go. Moments later when senior guard Zoie Sheng hit Camera for a layup, Academy of Art began its comeback. Camera would convert two more baskets in the paint and Guinn knocked down a triple to shorten the gap to just 60-50 moving to the fourth.

All in the first minute, Camera kept hope alive with another jumper, Guinn inspired the team with a three-point play, and junior forward D'Andree Galipeau put in a layup to bring ART U within six points. Academy of Art later exercised its defensive will with a 9-0 run that featured points off steals by Camera and Sheng, culminating in the Knights first lead since the second quarter at 68-67.

With the score tied 69-69, PLNU's leading scorer Madison West delivered a layup that was promptly answered by Camera's jumper. Academy of Art had a chance at the win after Storey stole the ball with 24 seconds, but the potential game-ender did not fall for Camera and a 71-71 tie called for overtime.

ART U went right to work in the extra period as Camera continued to score inside the three-point arc and Storey connected on a pair of long shots during a determined 10-0 surge to start. Sheng free throws made it a 12-point game with 1:20 left and she would return to the foul line to make five of her next six to seal the 90-82 win.

Remaining atop the PacWest Conference standings, the Knights rise to 16-1 and 21-6 overall led by production across the board once again. Camera finished with a career-high 26 points on 11-for-20 shooting from the field as well as five assists and four rebounds. Sheng approached the program's first quadruple-double, ending with nine points, nine assists, seven rebounds, a career-high seven steals, and no turnovers. Storey posted 23 points including six 3-pointers while Guinn's 11th double-double of the year came in the form of 20 points and 11 rebounds along with five assists.

The loss drops Point Loma to 17-7 overall and 10-6 in conference. West was hot from long range, knocking down five 3-pointers en route to a game-high 27 points. Alex Brunk added 20 points and 14 rebounds while Roya Rustamzada posted 14 points and 14 rebounds.

After returning from its week-long roadtrip, ART U will have four days to prepare for its final regular season road game this weekend. The Urban Knights are at Dominican on Feb. 20 for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.
