ART U RESUMES COMPETITION IN HAWAII FOLLOWING 13-DAY BREAKAfter rainy Bay Area weather postponed Academy of Art University softball's doubleheader hosting Azusa Pacific to create nearly two weeks between games, the Urban Knights travel to Hawaii for an intensive stretch. ART U will play one-fifth of its season on the islands with 10 games making up a full tour of the four Pacific West Conference Hawaii schools – Chaminade, BYU-Hawaii, Hawaii Pacific, and UH Hilo.
FIRST PITCHART U begins its week on Saturday, Mar. 12 with a doubleheader against Chaminade at Central Oahu Regional Park in Waipahu starting at noon HT (2 p.m. PT). The teams clash the following day, Mar. 13, at CORP once more for two at 2:30 p.m. HT (5:30 p.m. PT). After a day off, the Knights make their way to the other side of Oahu for a 1 p.m. HT (4 p.m. PT) doubleheader at BYU-Hawaii's Softball Field in Laie on Mar. 15. Two days later on Mar. 17, Academy of Art matches up with Hawaii Pacific starting 1 p.m. HT (4 p.m. PT) at Howard A. Okita Field in Kaneohe. A day of island-hopping takes ART U to Hilo on Mar. 19 where UH Hilo awaits a noon HT (3 p.m. PT) twinbill to close the trip. Live coverage will be available via the links above. KNIGHT WATCHOffensively, the team is led by two individuals with the same first name in freshman infielder
Brenna Youngquist and sophomore pitcher
Brenna Mitchell. Youngquist is hitting a team-best .346 in addition to having the most doubles (5) and runs batted in (13). Mitchell is just behind her teammate with a .344 batting average to go with the most home runs for ART U (3) and the sixth-highest slugging percentage (.688) in the PacWest.
Taking streaks of seven games with a hit and 12 games having reached base into Hawaii, freshman infielder
Juliana Lopez is now hitting .343 on the year. Junior outfielder
Jessica West remains the team's leader in runs scored (9) though both of her outfield mates, junior
Hallie Curtis and senior
Andrea Gill, have each touched home plate eight times thus far.
In addition to leading the team in home runs, Mitchell (4-4) sports the squad's lowest ERA (2.98) with 28 strikeouts in 54.0 innings pitched. She is ninth in the PacWest in strikeouts and 11th in walks allowed (14).
SWORD PLAYSplitting five of eight series thus far before a Mar. 10 twinbill against Holy Names, Chaminade finishes a 10-game homestand against ART U. The Silverswords swept Notre Dame de Namur with two high-scoring affairs, but turned around and were swept by Dominican two days later. Rainelle Matsuoka is one of Chaminade's most dangerous hitters, having clubbed six home runs and driven in 13 thus far. Luana Moreno (4-4) is responsible for nearly half of the Silverswords' 108 innings in the circle, carrying a 3.55 ERA in eight starts. The Knights hold a 13-5 advantage over Chaminade in 18 previous meetings.
THE SEA SIDEAfter going 2-10 in its first 12 games, BYU-Hawaii has won three of its last four including a sweep of Occidental. The Seasiders will host Dominican for four contests on Mar. 11-12 prior to facing Academy of Art. Kalynn Latu's .444 batting average leads the team, but Tiffany Smith has accounted for nearly a fourth of the squad's RBIs (15). Meghan Wantz (3-8) has a 3.22 ERA through 74.0 innings pitched. The historical matchup favors ART U 15-7.
SHARK ATTACKPlaying at home for its first 20 games of the year, Hawaii Pacific will make its first trip off Oahu for a four-part series at Dixie State on Mar. 12-13. Most recently, the Sharks took four from Holy Names then split with Dominican and Occidental to bring them close to .500 at 9-11 on the year. Kayla Sanchez paces HPU in a variety of offensive categories including batting average (.380), runs scored (12), and runs batted in (14). Starting three of her six appearances, Alexis Morales (2-1) owns the best ERA (3.47) through 23.1 innings pitched. Hawaii Pacific holds a 15-3 advantage in the teams' history.
HELLO HILOSecond in the PacWest standings with a 9-1 conference record, UH Hilo competed in both the Montana State Billings Desert Stinger and Dixie State's Red Storm Classic and won four games heading into PacWest play. After sweeping BYU-Hawaii and NDNU in four games each series, the Vulcans were hit with their first loss at Dominican's hand, but bounced back with a 10-2 win over the Penguins. UH Hilo will play Holy Names on Mar. 12 before hosting the Knights. Victoria Garcia ranks third in the PacWest in RBIs (20) and seventh in batting average (.429) while Billi Derleth (8-4) has a 2.35 ERA through 10 starts and 74.1 innings pitched. In eight previous meetings, the Knights and Vulcans are an even 8-8.
ART U SWEEPS HAWKS IN FIRST PACWEST SERIESMaking its 2016 Pacific West Conference debut on
Feb. 27 out at the College of Marin, Academy of Art University softball showed its offensive versatility with 5-3 and 13-3 wins over Holy Names. Freshman infielder
Katie Tablada helped the Urban Knights break a 3-3 game one tie with a run-scoring double in the sixth then a nine-run first inning highlighted ART U's second-most runs scored in program history during a five-inning game two.
LOOKING AHEADWhen Academy of Art returns from Hawaii, the Urban Knights will tangle with two local PacWest opponents in Notre Dame de Namur (Mar. 25) and Dominican (Mar. 26) both at Mission Blue Field.
