WAIPAHU, Hawaii – Back at Central Oahu Regional Park to finish a four-game series with Chaminade on Sunday, Academy of Art University softball highlighted a doubleheader sweep with one of the program's biggest days at the plate ever. The Urban Knights scored six runs in the first inning and would go on to win the opener 7-2 then went on another six-run rally early in game two en route to tying the program record with 14 runs scored. That 14-8 win saw more history as freshman infielder
Brenna Youngquist set a new single-game record with six runs batted in along with her third home run of the year.
"We had two team goals today: 1. To be clutch for our team, 2. To stay hungry. We accomplished both," said head coach
Sonja Garnett.
GAME ONEAcademy of Art went right to work to start the day, getting one run in on a wild pitch before the hit parade began. Senior outfielder
Andrea Gill was the first of four players who delivered run-scoring singles as junior outfielder
Hallie Curtis, freshman infielder
Jennifer Thompson, and junior outfielder
Jessica West all followed. When the dust had settled, ART U was up 6-0 and Chaminade had yet to come to the plate.
The Knights proceeded to get at least one runner aboard in each of the next five innings while sophomore pitcher
Brenna Mitchell (6-4) and the ART U defense kept Chaminade at bay. Lopez came up in the top of the seventh still without a hit and ended up delivering a run-scoring single with the bases loaded to extend her team's lead to 7-0. The Swords would rally for two in the seventh, but Academy of Art closed out the 7-2 win on a groundout.
GAME TWOIn a foreshadowing of things to come, Youngquist led off the second inning with her third home run of the season, a solo shot, to give her team a 1-0 lead early. The third inning was a bit of déjà vu from game one with the Urban Knights putting up five hits before an out was made. Both West and Youngquist delivered two-run doubles in the surge then later sophomore infielder
Samantha Klune drove in another and Gill singled one home to cap ART U's second six-run inning of the day.
"It felt amazing to come through for my team today, but it felt even better to see my team hyped and hungry for more runs," said Youngquist. "We are really starting to come together and we are just getting started. It's definitely a great feeling to be apart of #ARTUSBsquaaa!"
Though Chaminade got one back in their half of the third and another in the fourth, Academy of Art kept the pressure on with a run-scoring single from none other than Youngquist in the Knights' fourth. Starting pitcher redshirt junior
Hunter Allen (2-4) allowed three runs in the fifth, but continued to pitch with a lead after striking out a pair in the inning.
That gave way to a three-run sixth for ART U in which Youngquist sent a two-run single through the left side, breaking the longstanding record of five shared by
Alana Aweau (2010), Genna Allen (2012), and
Kamyle Glover (2015).
"
Brenna Youngquist had a huge performance today," said Garnett. "She has been swinging well and her approach with runners on has been great.
Juliana Lopez has also been incredibly consistently for us."
An 11-6 lead heading into the final inning was furthered by another three-run rally started by West's sacrifice fly and punctuated by Klune's two-run single up the middle. Similarly to game one, Chaminade did not give up so easily, loading the bases and scoring twice in the bottom half before relenting in Academy of Art's 14-8 victory.
Now 9-10-1 on the year and 5-1 in conference play, ART U. The 14 runs in game two marked the third time Academy of Art has reached that scoring output and just their second against a NCAA DII opponent. The Knights' 13 RBIs were second-most in program history and their 17 hits were tied for the fifth-most. Both were the most since Garnett took over as head coach.
Youngquist finished game two 4-for-4 with the six RBIs, a double, home run, and two runs scored. West was 4-for-7 on the day with four runs batted in while Lopez was 3-for-8 and also tied the program record with four runs scored in the finale. She shares that mark with Ashley Lokey and becomes the first Urban Knight to touch home plate that many times in the last four years. Lopez also extended her to 11 games and has now reached base in 16 consecutive contests. Mitchell now has a seven-game hit streak and 12-game reached base streak going after completing Sunday 5-for-9 with a double.
Defensively, Mitchell picked up the win in the opener, going a complete 7.0 innings with two runs allowed on five hits and four strikeouts. Allen earned the game two victory with four earned runs allowed through 7.0 innings and a season-high eight strikeouts.
"
Hunter Allen threw her first complete game today, and fought through some very trying situations," said Garnett. "I am proud of how she and
Brenna Mitchell threw in this series."
Chaminade drops to 8-14 overall and 4-8 in the PacWest. Offense was big for the Silverswords as well and it was the tandem of Rainelle Matsuoka (3-for-8, triple, two RBIs) and Kaitlin Kim (2-for-2, triple, two RBIs) who did much of the damage.
Academy of Art continues its Hawaii roadtrip on Tuesday, Mar. 15 at BYU-Hawaii with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. HT (4 p.m. PT).
"While I am proud of our efforts these past two days, we have to prepare for BYU-Hawaii," said Garnett. "We have to make small adjustments and continue to get better each outing."
