Hawkins Shoots Her Way Into NCAA Nationals

STOCKTON, Calif. – It was a emotional day at Brookside Country Club: sophomore Sterling Hawkins made history by becoming the second Academy of Art women's golfer to qualify for the NCAA Division II National Championship.

Hawkins entered the third day of the Super Regionals tied for 11th-place and needed a strong final round in order to receive a berth to Nationals. The San Jose native shot for par in 15 out of 18 holes including a streak of 11 where she was right on the mark. On the seventh hole, she posted her first birdie of the round and team-high sixth of the tournament. All in all, Hawkins shot a 73 (+1) which gave her a career-best 6th-place overall ranking. Furthermore, the sophomore joins California Baptist's Erica Wang as the only two players to represent the Pacific West Conference in the National Championship.

Juniors Crystal Wang and Roxanne Matta both tied for 27th in the competition with an overall stroke total of 227. Matta had the second-best third round for the Urban Knights, scoring a 74 while posting two birdies in the back nine holes. Freshman Sabrina Virtusio posted her best round on the final day, improving seven strokes over her second round total and tied for 56th in the tournament.

As a team, ART U put together their best round on Wednesday, scoring 298 and finished in seventh-place. The field was tightly contested, however: the team's overall total of 904 strokes was just 14 behind third-place West Texas A&M who nabbed the final team spot at Nationals.

The women's golf championship will be held May 18-21 at Common Ground Golf Course in Aurora, Colo.
