ART U, Wang Capture Team/Individual Title

Art of Golf Classic Final Results

SAN FRANCISCO – After an impressive first round, the No. 20-ranked Urban Knights headed into the final day of the Art of Golf Classic with a 13-stroke lead over the competition. ART U carried their momentum over into Tuesday, capturing the team title with senior Crystal Wang at the helm who took home the first-place individual trophy.

As a collective, the Urban Knights saw their scores improve on the second day, lowering their overall stroke total by one. Sonoma State was close on their heels heading into Tuesday, but the Knights pulled away from the Seawolves, finishing with a twenty-stroke lead. This is the first time that Academy of Art has won a title outright since February 23, 2015 when they won the CBU Women's Invitational and it is their 9th overall team victory.

On the individual side, Wang followed up her strong first round by shooting a 77 ( 4) which was enough to maintain her first-round lead and come away as the individual champion for the third time in her career. She finished with a total of 150 strokes, three less than Sonoma State's Haley Whitbeck who placed second. Junior Shu-lin Lin was the second-best finisher for the Urban Knights (5th overall) and improved an impressive eight strokes over her day one shot total, placing her on the All-Tournament Team. Sophomore Han-Chuan "Vicky" Kuo excelled in her first-ever collegiate competition as she was also given All-Tournament honors and placed 6th overall, just seven strokes behind Wang. Senior Roxanne Matta and junior Sterling Hawkins rounded out the top scorers for ART U, sharing a tie for 10th-place along with Jamie Lopez from Holy Names. Matta was impressive in her own right, tying with Whitbeck for the most birdies in the tournament (six), and was the top finisher in all par-3 holes, finishing two under in that category.

Although the weather conditions were drastically different from day one to day two, Academy of Art proved their dominance in adverse conditions and showed their potential for the season to come.

The Urban Knights' next tournament will take place on October 2 when they head to St. George, Utah to compete in the Dixie State Invitational.
