SAN FRANCISCO – Tuesday marked a brand new season as BYU-Hawaii (2-1-1, 1-0 PacWest) visited San Francisco for the season's first Pacific West Conference match. The Seasiders hit the ground running in the first half, tallying four goals and went on to defeat the Urban Knights (0-5-1, 0-1 PacWest) 5-0.
Â
BYU-Hawaii's first strike was in the 11th-minute: the Seasiders' shot on goal was saved by sophomore goalkeeper
Kevin Mendez, but ricocheted to the feet of Jacob McRae who quickly switched sides, chipping the ball over ART U's defense. The cross was perfect as it was served to Peter Puertas who knocked it in for his first goal of the season. The Urban Knights had a similar misfortune seven minutes later when BYUH scored off of another ricochet. The Seasiders would add two more in the period to go into the half leading by four.
Â
In the second period, the Urban Knights put together a more successful defensive front, only allowing one goal to get through with just over 20 minutes remaining. Their offense was more active as well, taking five of their eight shots in the second half. Sophomore
Bobby Gutierrez led the way in that category with two shots and one on goal.
"It was good to get some guys back in the lineup today," said head coach
Mike Keller. "We started the game well, but gave up goals against the run which hurt our momentum."
Â
Academy of Art will get their second PacWest test on Saturday when UH Hilo comes to town. ART U
defeated Hilo 2-1 in 2015 after going the distance in a two-overtime affair.
"Hilo has improved since last year," said Keller. "We are going to improve as well and keep working hard."
