SAN FRANCISCO – On a warm day at City College of San Francisco, the weather could not cool Academy of Art women's soccer (0-6-1, 0-1-1 PacWest). Despite facing a 1-0 deficit with 12 minutes remaining in regulation against UH Hilo (2-1-2, 0-0-2), junior midfielder
Laney Haviland was able to propel the Urban Knights into a two-overtime tie with her first goal of the season.
Â
The Vulcans controlled the possession in the first half and their offense was the benefactor: Hilo put themselves ahead with a goal by Abcde Zoller in the 24th minute when she was able to outduel ART U defenders and win the one-on-one battle with sophomore goalkeeper
Morgan Wirz. Overall, Hilo compiled eight shots in the first period, while the Knights managed two.
Â
In the second half, Academy of Art began to get a better read on the Vulcan's defense. Despite taking five shots leading into the final minutes, ART U was unable to erase the deficit until redshirt senior midfielder
Natalie Gabriel passed to Haviland who one-timed Hilo's keeper and scored in the back right corner. The goal was the Fashion Styling major's third of her career. With ten minutes left in regulation, both sides combined for five shots, looking to score the match's final goal. However, their efforts were unsuccessful, and the game proceeded into overtime.
Â

In the third period, each side only managed three shots. The Urban Knights' best opportunity was in the 93rd minute when Gabriel leaped to head the ball towards the net. However, her attempt was thwarted by Hilo's Jenna Hufford in goal.
Â
ART U looked to put the Vulcans away in the second overtime, compiling six shots (one on goal) compared to Hilo's one (on goal). Senior defender
Maddie Shelton received a chance with just 14 seconds on the clock, but her shot was off the mark and the game ended in a 1-1 tie.
Â
"We saw a lot of creativeness today and things starting to show that we've been practicing," said head coach
Katie Awerkamp. "Our defense also played really well.
Maggie Alikpala-Wilson made some great saves that really kept us in the game."
Â
Junior goalkeeper Alikpala-Wilson entered the game in the second half and compiled seven saves, her highest mark this season.
