Men's Soccer Defeats Concordia in 2017 Finale

SAN BRUNO, Calif. – For the final time of the 2017 season, Academy of Art men's soccer took the field for what would be an exciting finish to the year. After a career-first goal for freshman Jaret Gil at the end of the first half, the Urban Knights managed to shut down Concordia, defeating the fourth-place Eagles 1-0.

In the first half, ART U controlled the majority of the possession-time, limiting CUI to just three shots while taking 10 themselves. Their 1164850, first-half shots were the highest mark in the opening period this season and the second time that they have reached a double-digit shot total in a single period. The Urban Knights' offense was fueled by junior midfielder Bobby Gutierrez's five first-half shots including two on-goal. It was the Riverside, Calif. native's fifth shot that led to ART U's eventual game-winning goal. In the 43rd-minute, Gutierrez took a shot near the right post which the Eagles' goalkeeper managed to save. However, the deflection landed at Gil's feet who crossed the ball into the back of the net for his first goal in an Urban Knights uniform.

In the second period, ART U continued to make their offensive-presence known while still holding Concordia's attack at-bay. In fact, CUI did not take their first shot of the half until after nearly 20 minutes had expired. The Eagles' best chance to score came with just 17 remaining: after receiving a corner kick, Concordia's Eric Torres took a shot into the middle of the scrum standing less than one yard away from the goal. However, sophomore goalkeeper Jakob Primbas managed to get ahold of the ball and prevent it from crossing the plane to preserve the shutout and 1-0 victory.

Both Primbas and junior keeper Kevin Mendez receive credit for the shutout as both shared time in front of the net, aiding ART U in defeating CUI for the first time in program-history. Gil's first-half goal was one of his two shots overall while Gutierrez led the team with five. As a whole, the Urban Knights finished with 14 shots and gave the Eagles just their third conference loss this season. Academy of Art finishes the year with a record of 5-12-1 overall and 4-9 in conference to finish 10th in the PacWest.
