ART U Falls To Silverswords After Late Push

HONOLULU – Academy of Art men's basketball took a seven-point lead into the half, but Chaminade regained momentum in the second, putting together a run that ART U could not overcome.  

It was a back-and-forth opening half with the lead changing hands five separate times. However, after trailing by as much as seven points, the Urban Knights clawed from behind to tie the game at 14 apiece with 14:12 to play. After trading a pair of baskets, ART U took control for the next six minutes. After the Silverswords tied things up 25-25, the Urban Knights pulled ahead and did not trail for the remainder of the period. After junior guard Kendall Brown landed a triple, both sides held each other scoreless for nearly four minutes until ART U regained control and outscored Chaminade 10-6 in the closing minutes of the first half. As both sides headed to the lock rooms, the Urban Knights held a seven-point 38-31 lead, their largest advantage of the night.  

The battle continued when the second half began, but ART U held on to the lead. At the 16:16 mark, Academy of Art was ahead by five points, 44-39 when the power went out on the scoreboard and shot clock, resulting in a 21-minute delay. When play resumed, the Silverswords went on a 16-0 run to give them an 11-point advantage. Chaminade continued to extend their lead, putting the Urban Knights in the hole by 14 points. However, ART U responded with nine unanswered points, highlighted by three from junior guard Victor Nwaba. Academy of Art now only trailed by two points with 6:33 remaining. However, Chaminade recaptured their momentum and pulled away for the eventual victory 81-70 victory.

Brown played a big part in the Urban Knights' success in the first half, scoring 12 of ART U's 38 points. The Corona, Calif. native went on to lead the team with 16, his second-highest total of the season. Three others scored in double-digit figures including: freshman guard Dante Williams (13 points, five rebounds), senior forward Chris Salas (11 points, four rebounds, and a steal), and Nwaba (10 points, six rebounds, and a steal).

ART U will continue their road trip on Monday, February 13 when they take on No. 3 Hawaii Pacific at 6:30 p.m. HT.
