ART U Bounces Back With Dominant 8-1 Win

TURLOCK, Calif. – After falling to Division I, San Jose State on Friday, No. 11 Academy of Art women's tennis bounced back in a big way. With an 8-1 victory over Stanislaus State on Sunday, the Urban Knights improved to 13-3 on the season.

ART U was dominant in doubles, sweeping the category and only surrendering one game in the second and third positions combined. The No. 11 duo, sophomores Alma Thell-Lenntorp and Klara Thell-Lenntorp, were contested in first doubles, but took the match by a score of 8-6. Senior Annika Schneider and freshman Mariacristina Andrisani teamed up in the second position and were nearly flawless with an 8-1 score. In third doubles, sophomores Monika Stanikova and Paula Alcantara were the only tandem to not lose a game, sweeping their adversaries 8-0.

Just two wins away from taking their 13th victory of the season, Academy of Art went on to win five of the six singles matches to come. The only Urban Knight to fall on Sunday was Stanikova in the first position. After dropping the first set, the Advertising major took the second by a score of 6-1. Movie into a tiebreaker, Stanikova came close, but ultimately fell 10-6. Andrisani also entered a third set, but came away with a win thanks to a 10-4 performance in the tiebreaker. A. Thell-Lenntorp was strong in her fifth-singles match, sweeping her opponent 6-0, 6-0 to remain undefeated in Division II singles.

After spending the last seven matches on the road, ART U will now return home for their final two matches of the regular season ahead of the PacWest Conference Championship. Their next contest will take place on April 7 at 2:00 p.m. when they host the Penguins of Dominican.
