Dennis Rose Invitational Round 1 Results
WAIKOLOA, Hawaii --Â Starting off their third and final tournament of the fall season, the Academy of Art men's golf team collectively shot a 288 to stay even with par and check in at fourth of 15 teams after one round in the Dennis Rose Invitational.
A steady first day at the Waikoloa Kings' Course was led by quality performances from junior
Gabriel De Leon Manotoc, senior
Lawrence Liang, and sophomore
Matthew Watkins who combined for 11 of the team's 13 birdies. Manotoc went on a run with three of those birdies on the final four holes of the course's back nine, propelling him to a 70 (-2) and a tie for fourth.
Three birdies had Liang just a single stroke behind Manotoc with a 71 (-1) and tied for 12th while Watkins, sitting 16th alongside four others, had his four birdies balanced out by four bogies for a score of 72. Rounding out the Urban Knights' qualifiers was junior
Otto Homruen who posted a 75 (+3) to put him in a tie for 36th overall.
Behind the day one leader Western Washington (280) is a tie between Sonoma State (282) and tournament host UH Hilo (282) before Academy of Art (288). ART U is four strokes ahead of Stanislaus State (292).
The teams will resume play Tuesday back on the links at the Waikoloa Kings' Course for the second of three rounds.
