SAN FRANCISCO -- Academy of Art women's soccer out-shot UH Hilo in the second half of Thursday's PacWest matchup, but an early goal by the Vulcans made the difference in a 1-0 loss.
The Vulcans jumped out to an early lead in the sixth minute when Maleni Avalos scored her first goal of the season. Senior goalkeeper
Morgan Wirz made a save batting away a shot on goal, but it bounced right to Avalos who booted the rebound in the middle of the net. ART U successfully defended against a barrage of shots the remainder of the half and kept the match at 1-0 at the break.
Academy of Art came back out strong completely shutting down the Vulcan's attack allowing only four shots the entire second half. The only two shots on goal were saved by sophomore goalkeeper
Lara Pflicke to bring her season total to 14. Sophomore
Sydney Cooke led the Knights offensively with three shots, two on goal, including a penalty kick in the 50th minute that missed high. Junior
Anissa Wilson also collected three shots with one on goal to bring ART U's second half shots to nine, more than double the UHH shot output. Despite ART U's strong second half offense and their shut out defense the Vulcan's lone goal held up for the 1-0 final score.
Women's soccer will have a week break before their next PacWest clash with Notre Dame de Namur Thursday Oct. 11 at 3 p.m. in Belmont, California.
