Saint Mary's Invitational Final Results
MORAGA, Calif. -- As one of only two DII schools represented at the Saint Mary's Invitational, Academy of Art collected five doubles victories and 11 singles wins, including a championship in the singles consolation A bracket by senior
Klara Thell-Lenntorp.
Klara began her journey through the consolation bracket after taking a loss in the first round of the singles A from University of San Francisco's Mya Bui. She was then awarded a bye in the first round of the consolation bracket before taking down Dohee Lee of The University of the Pacific 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (5) in the quarterfinals. The Sweden native then defeated University of Washington's Ava Markham by a score of 6-7 (4), 6-3, 1-0 (5) for a chance in the finals where she reigned victorious over Jennifer Timotin of Fresno State in a 6-2, 7-5 match to be crowned champion of the singles consolation A bracket.
Senior
Monika Stanikova earned her lone singles win against Timotin before falling in the round of 16 to the eventual tournament champion Niluka Madurawe of Stanford. In the singles B bracket freshman
Sofia Ragona swept her first match against Stanford's Tylor Lallas 6-0,6-0 and
Mariacristina Andrisani defeated Christina Zordani of University of Washington in a three set match 4-6, 6-2, 6-4. Andrisani fell the following round to the champion of the B bracket Alba Pedero Galindo of San Jose State University 6-2, 6-0.
Senior
Taisiia Andrieieva won a pair of games, first against San Jose State's Kristina Baran 6-3, 6-1, then took down Hannah Highsmith of Sonoma State in a 6-4, 6-2 victory.Â
In doubles, the pair of Ragona and Andrisani claimed two victories in the consolation B bracket, starting with California Berkley's Jasie Dunk and Jessica Zeynel 8-7. Next was an 8-5 win against Ioana Popescu and Anna Ramos Vinolas of the University of the Pacific to advance to the finals where they dropped an 8-4 match to the pair of Clarissa Colling and Jenna DeTurk of Sonoma State.
Junior
Kristina Gross and Andrieieva played for a championship in the doubles C bracket after dominating Jessica Kaye and Hannah Ketcherside eight sets to one, but the duo was defeated in the finals 8-3 by Jessica Walker of UC Davis and Jane Ellis of Fresno Pacific.
Rounding out the doubles wins were senior
Paula Alcantara and Stanikova who moved past Grace Olyphant and Emily Ackerman of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo by way of an 8-5 victory. The pair lost the following round to the runner ups Nikita Pradeep and Shirley Hall of UC Davis.
After completing the Saint Mary's Invitational, Academy of Art women's tennis is set to travel to Rome, Ga. to compete in the ITA Oracle Cup Oct. 12-14 for a chance to qualify for the Oracle ITA National Fall Championship.
