SAN FRANCISCO – Despite out-scoring Concordia in the second quarter and getting a season-high 18 points from junior forward
Ines Medina, Academy of Art women's basketball dropped their second Pacific West Conference game to the Concordia 83-59 on Saturday afternoon inside Kezar Pavilion.
Although the Eagles started the game up 8-0, the Urban Knights responded with a 7-3 run capped by a 3-pointer from Medina. The lead would expand once more, however, as CUI's 11-1 response put them in front 20-8. The quarter did end on a positive note with Medina and junior guard Briana Cates converting back-to-back layups to cut the deficit down to single digits.
A layup by Cates began the second quarter and had the lead reduced to 20-14, but Concordia nailed two triples during an 8-1 rebuttal that was later met by an 8-0 ART U surge featuring six points from freshman guard
Chanel Stuart. Sophomore forward
Lily Perkins and sophomore forward
Megan Jefferson each converted put-back scores on offensive rebounds to keep Academy of Art in striking distance before a dramatic final seconds of the half. Though a Medina layup brought her team to within two with 21 seconds left, the Eagles would have the last say on a 3-pointer at the buzzer to put them in front 41-36 at the break.

The Knights fought hard to stay on the heels of the Eagles, converting their first three baskets to start the second half including a triple from senior guard
Inga Kot. To their credit, CUI was efficient out of halftime as well and soon their advantage had returned to double figures. A 5-0 run late in the third quarter kept Academy of Art in the battle, but after Concordia scored three layups to begin the fourth, ART U would come no closer and steady production by the Eagles earned them an 83-59 victory.
Two games into PacWest play, Academy of Art is 1-4 overall and 0-2 in conference. In 35 minutes off the bench, Medina scored a total of 18 points with nine of those in the third quarter alone. She also grabbed 11 rebounds to produce her second double-double of the season. Stuart offered 11 points, Kot contributed 10 points, and Jefferson amassed 10 rebounds including a career-high six on the offensive glass.
"We talked about being a better rebounding team and second efforts to score," said head coach
Camille Williams. "We did better on the offensive boards and it showed with having 13 second-chance points. Also Megan and Ines continue to show strength on the boards and their extra effort gives us a fighting chance."
For Concordia, now 1-5 on the year and 1-1 in PacWest play, there were a pair of double-doubles as Kennedy Fulcher posted 30 points plus 18 rebounds and Michaela Vanderklugt added 14 points with 11 rebounds.
The Urban Knights will next depart from conference play for their makeup game at Chico State on Monday, Dec. 3 set to begin at 6 p.m.
