Knights Come From Behind, Defeat Cal State LA 5-4

No. 6 Academy of Art versus Cal State LA Final Results

SAN FRANCISCO – Battling rain delays and a tough Cal State LA team, No. 6 ART U women's tennis found themselves out of their element when the Golden Eagles took two of the three doubles matches. However, the Urban Knights showed their resolve by taking four of the six singles matches for a come-from-behind, 5-4 victory.

The No. 6-ranked twins, Alma Thell-Lenntorp and Klara Thell-Lenntorp were the only duo to record a win in the doubles portion of the contest: they defeated their opponents in the first position by the score of 8-3.

"Today, the twins played great again in doubles, but we were not used to trailing 2-1 going into singles," said head coach Clarisse Baca. "However right after, the team got together and agreed to step it up."

Moving into singles trailing 2-1 for the first time this season, ART U had their work cut out for them, needing four wins in six matches to take home the win. They did just that, recording victories in the first, third, fourth, and fifth positions. Junior Monika Stanikova looked strong in first singles, taking down her adversary 6-2, 6-3 while No. 28 K. Thell-Lenntorp won her match in the third position by the same score. A Thell-Lenntorp only surrendered two games in her 6-0, 6-2 win while junior Taisiia Andrieieva entered a third set with her opponent for the third straight match and fifth time overall this season. However, after dropping the first set 6-3, the Odessa, Ukraine native had no problem in securing the final two, both by the score of 6-2.

"I was very happy to see their efforts in the singles matches," said Baca. "Taisiia played an amazing second and third set: she believed in herself and played to her strengths which ultimately gave us the win. We are definitely happy about having a strong week."

After a long week, hosting three of the top-ranked teams in the region, the Urban Knights came out with 2-1 record and are now 7-2 on the season. ART U will now prepare for a match on Friday, March 16 when they head to San Diego to take on No. 22 Point Loma.
