ART U vs APU
Academy of Art and Azusa Pacific have faced each other twice this season and the Urban Knights have twice bested the Cougars. Their first matchup this season was in Azusa on
March 17. In the contest, ART U took two doubles matches at the first and third positions, including an 8-0 sweep by juniors
Alma Thell-Lenntorp and
Klara Thell-Lenntorp who were ranked No. 6 at the time. Then, in singles, the Urban Knights continued to roll, coming away with victories in four of the six contests to come away with a 6-3 victory.
Â
The second time that the two teams faced each other was on
April 20 in the PacWest Championship Semifinals match. Once again, the Knights defeated APU, this time sweeping the doubles portion of the contest. Heading into singles with a 3-0 lead, both ART U and the Cougars won a pair of matches, giving Academy of Art the 5-2 win and the program's second-ever berth into the PacWest Finals.
APU's FIRST POSTSEASON APPEARANCE
Saturday will mark Azusa Pacific women's tennis' first appearance in the postseason during the Division II era. The team has ridden a record of 19-8 this season which is the program's third-most wins in a season. Their success has been on the backs of multiple nationally ranked players. Singles: Toby Miclat (No. 2) Petra Ivankovic (No. 16), Diana Baumgartnere (No. 51) and April Wong (No. 54). Doubles: Toby Miclat and Petra Ivankovic (No. 38).
The team began to catch fire at the end of the season, winning seven of their last eight games before heading to the PacWest Championship. During that stretch, the Cougars took down No. 1 Hawaii Pacific with a 5-4 win on March 29. APU won by showcasing their strong singles, coming all the way back from trailing 2-1 after doubles. Their four singles victories were highlighted by Toby Miclat's upset over No. 1 Lena Lutzeier in a 3-set match.
Â
The Cougars eventually finished third in the PacWest, just below Academy of Art in second.
