SAN FRANCISCO – The second meeting of the season between Academy of Art men's soccer and Holy Names was another tight contest, but unlike the first matchup, the second would provide sufficient scoring to decide a winner. Despite newly added freshman
Ping Yao scoring his first collegiate goal in his fourth career game, it was HNU that would take the win in Pacific West Conference action by a 3-1 final.
Yao's goal would come in the 84th minute and cut the deficit to just two, but the tally was not enough to spark a comeback from the Urban Knights (0-8-1, 0-4-0 PacWest) with such little time left. Scoring started for the Hawks (4-3-1, 2-0-0 PacWest) in the 32nd minute with a penalty kick goal after there was an ART U foul in the box, as Pablo Ramirez converted the opportunity past the Knights' diving freshman goalkeeper
Omer Tal. Controlling the possession in the first half was the Hawks, as they led the shot battle 10-4 at the half, but Tal was able to stop them on four of their looks.
Defense would get a bit tighter in the second half but Holy Names still found space to work, totaling seven more shots over the course of the frame and converting two of those chances into insurance goals. The first would come from Joel Rosales, as he finished a ball that was set up at the corner of the box by Gabriel Ventura to double the lead, while Ramirez tallied his second goal of the game after he dribbled towards the box and buried a shot from nearly 30 yards out unassisted.
While Academy of Art totaled seven shots in the match, only two would be on target, both of which came from the boot of Yao. He tied for the lead in shots on the Urban Knights in shots with three along with senior forward
Adrian Cekala, who after becoming the program's leading goal and points scorer
on Friday, was not able to find the scoresheet on Sunday. Playing all 90 minutes was Tal, who made five saves on the 17 shots faced.
The Knights return to the pitch on Oct. 16 when they host Fresno Pacific for the conclusion of this three-match homestand with kickoff time set for 2:30 p.m.
