Late Second Half Goal Downs Women's Soccer On Senior Day

SAN FRANCISCO – While Academy of Art women's soccer was able to find an equalizer early in the second half, the match would not remain level as Chaminade would find the go-ahead goal in the 74th minute, ultimately defeating ART U 2-1 in Pacific West Conference action on Senior Day.

Prior to all of the action, the Urban Knights honored their five seniors and one graduate student with a pregame ceremony in Dru Keizer, Jordyn Wight, Melissa Wilson, Veronica Rodriguez, Sydney Cooke and Alyssa Rasmussen. Space for offense was limited in the first half for the Urban Knights (2-10-2, 1-8-0 PacWest), as the Silverswords (6-6-0, 4-4-0 PacWest) made things tough after they scored in the 11th minute when Laina Jumawan dribbled her was through the midfield and launched a shot over the ART U keeper.

While the Chaminade defense held strong in the first half, the Knights quickly leveled the match after the second frame began, ART U's leading scorer Reyna Valencia buried her third goal of the campaign. The play started when graduate student midfielder Melissa Wilson took the ball from the right edge of the box and cut towards the middle of the field, where she would play a pass for Valencia to come in with the power shot and level the match. It marked the third tally of the season for Valencia, giving her a new career-high in a single season after she scored twice in both 2018 and 2019 while scoring only once in the shortened 2020 season.

Reyna ValenciaIn what was looking like a match that might need extra time to decide a winner, all would change in the 74th minute thanks to Sharon Cain of the Silverswords when she netted a goal on the volley, which came from a long cross off of a free kick by Savannah Breeze Miranda.

Even though the Knights outshot the Silverswords in the second half, none of their five chances were able to bring them level on the scoreboard. Both Valencia and Wilson would pace ART U with a pair of shots apiece, with both chances from Valencia making their way on target, including the goal assisted by Wilson. Also chipping in a shot each were senior midfielder Sydney Cooke and junior midfielder Baylie Christensen

Splitting time in net today was the senior combination of Dru Keizer and Jordyn Wight, with Keizer playing 47 minutes and making two saves while Wight did not record a save in her 42 minutes played.

Next Thursday's match will be the final of contest of 2021 for ART U, with kick off against Bay Area rival Dominican set for 11 a.m. on Nov. 11.
