Fall 2021 Sonoma State Men's Invitational (First Round)
SANTA ROSA, Calif. – It was not one but two rounds to begin the fall season for Academy of Art men's golf on Monday at the Sonoma State Men's Invitational, with junior
Matthew Watkins leading the way on the squad tied for 15th at 4-over-par 144, while ART U sits in 11th place at a combined 55-over-par.
With identical rounds of 2-over-par 74, Watkins is the only Urban Knight to in the top 20, sitting 10 strokes back of the leader Howard Yoon from Cal State Dominguez Hills (6-under-par 134). By the end of the day Watkins had seven birdies, five of which came during his opening round of the season. Keeping up the momentum in round two, Watkins began on the back nine where he went 1-under with a birdie and eight pars, though he ran into some trouble on the front nine.
Leading the team portion of the tournament is the duo of Cal State Monterey Bay along with Cal State San Marcos, as the two schools each shot a combined 15-over-par 575. The Knights will need a strong showing in the final round, as ART U trails 10th place Menlo by 23 strokes.
The final round of the Sonoma State Men's Invitational will begin tomorrow morning at 8:30 a.m.
