As agreed upon by the three Bay Area schools of the Pacific West Conference, it has been announced today that this year will see the inaugural version of the
Bay Area Clásico Cup, a competition between the men's and women's soccer programs of Academy of Art, Dominican, and Holy Names.
Bay Area Clásico Cup
The
Bay Area Clásico Cup is a competition in which the men's and women's soccer team of each university will be competing to earn points for their school in pool-style play. Each win will earn three points for their school, a tie will result in one point, while no points will be awarded for a loss. Only official PacWest matches between the three participating schools will count toward the standings.
If there is a tie in combined points after all of the matches are played, the tiebreaker consists of the aggregate scoring format, meaning the school with the most total goals combined between both their men's and women's teams over all of the matches is declared the winner. If a second tiebreaker is required, it will decided by combined goals allowed. The winning school will hold the
Bay Area Clásico Cup trophy for the entire calendar year until the cup returns next season.
On the men's side, Dominican currently boasts an overall 8-4-0 record (4-1-0 PacWest) which puts them atop of the conference. Holy Names sits three spots behind them with a 4-3-3 overall record (2-1-0 PacWest), while Academy of Art enters the cup currently in 10th place with a 3-7-3 overall record (0-4-1 PacWest).
The women's side features three squads eager to improve on their standing in the PacWest table. Despite Holy Names' (6-5-0, 0-3-0 PacWest) hot start to the season, they are currently coming off back-to-back losses. Meanwhile, Dominican (3-6-4, 0-4-1 PacWest) and Academy of Art (1-12-0, 0-5-0 PacWest) both picked up non-conference wins in their most recent respective matches.
Dominican will open the
Bay Area Clásico Cup at Academy of Art at CCSF in San Francisco this Sunday, Oct. 16. Holy Names will see its first cup action at home next Sunday, Oct. 23 against Academy of Art in Hayward, Calif.
