TURLOCK, Calif. – Up against Warrior Classic host Stanislaus State back inside Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena on Saturday, Academy of Art women's basketball was again just a basket back of the Warriors late in the third quarter, but could not keep up in the fourth, falling 62-49. Sophomore forward/center
Christy Ojide led with a career-high 21 points while sophomore guard
Jadence Clifton grabbed seven steals (one off the ART U single-game record) and dished out 10 assists (10th in ART U history) en route to being named to the All-Tournament Team.
After exchanging 3-pointers to start the afternoon, both sides continued to match each other's scores as senior guard
Lauryn Manns, Clifton, and Ojide accounted for the Urban Knights' side of a 7-7 tie. The Warriors rattled off eight straight only to see Ojide's layup and free throws plus a layup from freshman guard
Kyla Wandick shorten the gap to two points.
Back up eight in the early part of the second quarter, Stanislaus State again saw its lead shrink as Ojide converted two layups before freshman guard
Madison Johnson nailed a triple during a 9-4 run. The Warriors would have taken a double-digit advantage into the break were it not for a furious final minute and a half where five points were poured in while Clifton did everything but score with two steals and an assist.
More offense from Ojide helped keep the difference near the 35-31 halftime margin and, with just under three minutes to play in the third, another Johnson 3-pointer capped a 7-0 push to make it a two-point game at 44-42. Johnson nailed one more in the final minute, holding the difference at two, 47-45, heading into the fourth which was started by the Warriors' 8-0 run. Though ART U worked it to a six-point contest with four minutes left, time ran out on the comeback as the home team prevailed 62-49.
Sitting at 0-4 overall following its first two tournaments of the season, Academy of Art got the aforementioned game-high 21 points from Ojide on 8-for-15 shooting from the field and a 5-for-6 performance at the foul line in addition to seven rebounds. Clifton stuffed the stat sheet with six points, five rebounds, 10 assists (the eighth Urban Knight ever to do so), and seven steals (one theft from the program record achieved by six different Knights). A season-high nine points on three long range makes came from Johnson while Manns added eight points.
Stan State, now 2-2 overall this season, had three Warriors score in double figures as tournament MVP Liliana Marques' 13 points was supported by 10 apiece from Joia Armstrong and All-Tournament Team honoree Da'Myiah Lewis.
Set to play its lone game next week on Tuesday, Nov. 22, ART U will be in Stockton to take on NCAA Division I Pacific at 4 p.m.
