SAN FRANCISCO – Matched up against the No. 18 team in the country in Point Loma, Academy of Art women's soccer held its own through the first 45 minutes and went into the half trailing only by one, but PLNU pulled away with three second-half goals for a 4-0 Pacific West Conference victory on Thursday.
Living up to their billing, the nationally-ranked Sea Lions (11-2-4, 6-1-2 PacWest) showed their strong offense throughout most of the first half, keeping possession from the Urban Knights (1-16-0, 0-9-0 PacWest) while trying to generate scoring opportunities. Though Point Loma did break through with a goal in the 18th minute from Zoe Crockett, a strong first half from freshman goalkeeper
Alicia Calderon kept Academy of Art in the match, as she produced seven saves on 16 shots faced.
Coming out of the break and seeking the equalizer, the Knights put together a great scoring opportunity with quick passing leading to a break up the right wing. From near the corner, freshman forward
Danielle Medellin sent a cross back into the box intended for senior midfielder
Reyna Valencia, but the ball just nearly missed and sailed past the box untouched.
Minutes later in the 60th, the Sea Lions notched the first of their second-half trio of goals, all of which came directly from corner kicks. Two of those goals were scored by Chase Bibby and sandwiched a tally from Jensen Shrout, while Emma Rogers earned all three assists.
With only two saves in the second frame Calderon ended the match with a total of nine, reaching five or more saves for the 15th time this season. Already the ART U single season leader, Calderon's season totaled has now increased to 129, which is currently
the ninth-most in a single season in PacWest history.
One final match remains on the schedule for the Urban Knights, as the season finale for ART U hosts Senior Day on Saturday, Nov. 5 at 1 p.m. against Conocordia, with the senior ceremony taking place just prior to the match.
