2022 Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout (Rounds 1 & 2)

ALAMEDA, Calif. – Tasked with playing the first two rounds of the Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout at Chuck Corica Golf Complex on Monday, Academy of Art men's golf was led by junior Matthew Watkins ending his first two rounds with a combined score of 2-over-par 146, resting in 39th place while ART U as a squad sits in a tie for 15th place with an overall score of 29-over-par 605. 

It was a total of nine birdies on the day for Watkins, tied for the fifth-most of all players in the field, as his score of even-par 72 in the opening round was the best individual round on the day by an Urban Knight. Five of those birdies came in the first round, while he followed up with four in the second to go with an eagle on the sixth hole during his second round, as Watkins was one of 17 golfers to record at least one eagle (one player with two) en route to finishing at 2-over-par 74. 

Following behind Watkins was freshman Giulio Zanichelli, who tallied back-to-back round of 2-over-par 74 to put himself in a tie for 45th place. While he was able to total four birdies on the round, his day was consistent with a total of 24 par saves. Rounding out the scoring for ART U is the freshman duo of Anson Pan and Ralph Kho, as each are tied for 86th with combined scores of 13-over-par 157. Kho would match Zanichelli in birdies with a total of four on the day. 

At the pole position of the team leaderboard was Cal State Monterey Bay, ending the first two rounds of action at a combined 14-under-par 562, as they seven strokes up on second place Cal State East Bay (7-under-par 569). The top Pacific West Conference team in action is Holy Names, as they are tied for fourth with Simon Fraser at 4-under-par 572. The Knights are currently 43 strokes off the lead. 

The Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout concludes tomorrow on Mar. 15, as the third round tees off at 8:20 a.m. from Chuck Corica Golf Complex.
