2022 Mike Fanelli Track Classic Results (Day 1)
SAN FRANCISCO – The first 3000m steeplechase for
Saba Khvichava in an Academy of Art uniform was a special one. On an abbreviated first day of the Mike Fanelli Track Classic out at SF State's Cox Stadium on Thursday, Khvichava became a provisional qualifier for NCAA Division II Outdoor Nationals in his signature event.
Just on the edge of the nine-minute barrier, Khvichava finished the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 9:00.01, putting him slightly back of a pair from Western Washington as the third-fastest collegiate competitor on the day out of 32 runners in total. In addition to starting his ART U career in the event at second in program history, he was more than 13 seconds faster than the provisional standard and put himself sixth in the country during this early part of the outdoor season. Teammate
Hudson Lockette opened with a time of 9:48.71 which was a little over five seconds from his career-best.
In the women's 3000m steeplechase,
Audrey Rosencrans also competed for the first time since making her outdoor debut in the 5000m and finished in the middle of the pack of 22 total runners at 11:23.47.
ART U will split action tomorrow across the Mike Fanelli Track Classic and the Stanford Invitational.
