ART U Rolls To Convincing Win To Close Four-Match Week

SAN FRANCISCO – Academy of Art women's tennis ended a busy week in successful fashion on Saturday back home at Bay Club SF Tennis, as ART U captured the doubles point to begin the day before dominating singles play with five wins to complete a 6-1 victory over Cal State Los Angeles.

It was quick work to start the day for the Urban Knights (7-5), taking the first two doubles matches against the Golden Eagles (4-6) for the early point with the third match remaining unfinished. The first of the two matches to finish came on court three, where the ART U freshman duo of Paulina Alvarez and Erica Hellbe quickly disposed of Courtlyn Lam and Savaughnah Mayo, 6-2.

The doubles point was clinched by the pair of sophomore Yun "Nicole" Shiau and freshman Julia Ortega on court two, as there they ousted Noa Davico and Sakura Kurokawa, 6-3. Court one was one game shy of making it a clean sweep.

Momentum kept rolling for the Knights right into doubles action as Academy of Art won five of the six following singles matches, four of which came in straight sets. Capturing the first was freshman Maria Vittoria Casucci on court two where she defeated Sarah Olmos 6-3, 6-1. After a CSULA victory on court four to score their first and only point, the Knights returned to Julia Ortegatheir winning ways on court one thanks to Shiau, as she bounced Davico in identical 6-2, 6-2 sets.

Earning the match-clinching point was freshman Viktoria Leth on court three, as she dispatched Berta Acero, also in identical sets of 6-4, 6-4. Playing the match to finish, Alvarez would grab a victory over Lam on court six, doing so in back-to-back sets, 7-5, 6-4. Taking the final win of the day in exciting fashion on court five was Ortega, as she battled Chelsey Ruiz through a tie-breaking third set before finally pulling out the win, 7-5, 2-6, 10-8.

The next time out for ART U will be Senior Day, as the Urban Knights prepare to host Fresno Pacific on Saturday, Apr. 16 with the senior ceremony beginning at 11:45 a.m. prior to the first serve of the match at noon.
