Urban Knights Strike Late In Stags' Victory

CLAREMONT, Calif. – While Academy of Art men's soccer was able to net their first goal of the season late in ART U's non-conference battle against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, the early goals by CMS set the tone they would take a 4-1 victory on Saturday.

It was the Urban Knights (0-2-0) who put the first shot on the stat sheet, but the first goal would go the way of the Stags (0-0-0) during the ninth minute when Eric Sanchez finished off a cross pass from 15 yards out. A second goal from CMS would follow minutes later in the 23rd, as John Laidlaw was able to double the Stags lead when he finished a ball from inside the box to make the match 2-0.

The Urban Knights turned up the offensive pressure in their quest to draw level, and by the half would have a total of five shots with three on goal, but none could work their way to the back of the net. Another pair of quick strikes by the Stags to start the second half would double their lead, as Ethan Tyng put home a cross in the 54th minute before Laidlaw buried his second of the match with a volley off a cross in the 56th.

Down but not out, ART U kept the pressure alive and ultimately was awarded a penalty shot after CMS fouled while trying to break up a scoring chance, which junior forward Gilly Miller was able to bury for his and Academy of Art's first goal of the season during the 69th minute. It was his first first penalty kick attempt of his ART U career.

Along with his goal, Miller would lead the Knights in shots with two, both of which made it on target, while five other Urban Knights contributed a shot (only senior William Mychaltchouk's was on goal). Facing a total of 19 shots, ART U goalkeeper Davis King was able to produce three saves.

Continuing to search for their first win, Academy of Art will take on cross-town rival SF State in the Knights' first home match at Paul Goode Field on Friday, Sept. 2 beginning at 11:30 a.m.
