Second Half Tally Lifts Hawks Over Academy of Art 2-1

SAN FRANCISCO – Academy of Art women's soccer found an equalizer midway through the first half in their non-conference battle with Holy Names thanks to a great passing play, but HNU broke the tie later in the second half to claim a 2-1 victory on Wednesday.

It was a fast start to the game with the Hawks (5-2-0) scoring 14 minutes into the match. Holy Names benefited from a deflected shot off of a defender for the Urban Knights (0-7-0) as the ball snuck its way into the goal at the near post.

Undeterred, ART U turned up the pressure and leveled the match just over 10 minutes later in the 25th, which all started with a steal by sophomore defender Halldóra Einarsdóttir. After the takeaway, she dribbled forward before playing the ball back to the top of the box for redshirt sophomore forward Hannah Moore, who then buried her team-leading second goal of the season in the top right portion of the net. Despite Holy Names leading the shot battle 10-3 in the first frame, the match went into halftime still level at 1-1.

Seeking to pull in front on the scoreboard, Academy of Art launched three second half shots, including a chance on Womens Soccer Teamgoal from freshman forward Danielle Medellin that required a save from the HNU goalkeeper. However, none found their way to the back of the net, which allowed Holy Names to continue their offensive push before the Hawks found the game-winning goal off of a corner kick in the 72nd minute.

Making five saves over the course of the match was freshman goalkeeper Alicia Calderon, as she has made at least five saves in all seven matches for the Urban Knights this season. In her collegiate debut year, her save total has increased to 51 on a combined 186 shots faced.

Academy of Art will have the chance to rebound when they return to the pitch for Pacific West Conference play on Sept. 26, as the Urban Knights travel to Hawaii for three matches in six days against Hawaii Pacific, Chaminade, and UH Hilo.
