2022 Western Washington University Invitational (Final Round)
BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Two sophomore Urban Knights,
Giulio Zanichelli and
Anson Pan, closed out the final round of the 2022 Western Washington University Invitational in the red by shooting 2-under-par 70s, vaulting both into the top 20 as Academy of Art men's golf ended the tournament in 13th place with a combined overall score of 38-over-par 902.
Nearly finishing in the top 10 for the second consecutive tournament was Zanichelli as his round was anchored by four birdies, two on each of the front and back nine, before finishing in a tie for 12th place at even-par 216. This final round was his lowest score of the tournament, though he did also shoot under par in the opening round when he turned in a 1-under-par 71, and he was the only Knight to record double-digit birdies for the tournament with a total of 10.
Also making his way into the top 20 after an impressive round was Pan, tying for 16th place with a final score of 1-over-par 217. Progressively improving his score in each round, the sophomore collected two birdies and an eagle on the final day, taking advantage of the 11th hole for the second time in as many days to record another eagle. That made Pan one of just five golfers to record multiple eagles in the tournament.
Rounding out the scoring for Academy of Art was junior
Allan Osornio in 70th place at 17-over-par-233, while sophomore
Ralph Kho trailed shortly behind in a tie for 77th place at 22-over-par 238.
Capturing the victory in the individual portion of the tournament was Edvin Backstrom of Holy Names, as he birdied the 15th hole in a one-hole playoff over Andy Yoon of Cal State Dominguez Hills after both finished tied at a 8-under-par 208. Powered by the top individual finisher, HNU was also the top Pacific West Conference team in the tournament after placing third with a combined score of 4-under-par 860.
Academy of Art will get some time off before returning to the course, as the Urban Knights will participate in the Wildcat Classic hosted by Chico State beginning on Monday, Oct. 10.
