WAIPAHU, Hawaii – Seeking their fourth straight victory as they entered Pacific West Conference play, Academy of Art men's soccer remained scoreless with Hawaii Pacific through the first frame but could not match HPU's second-half tally, as the Sharks snatched the 1-0 win in the PacWest opener on Monday.
Though each team had a trio of chances in the opening half of play, the Urban Knights (3-4-1, 0-1-0 PacWest) were the most dangerous as they put all three of their shot attempts on target. Two of the attempts came from the boot of junior midfielder
Gilly Miller and the other from freshman forward
Ismaël Elmi, but all three were saved by Jeremy Zielinski of the Sharks (3-2-2, 1-0-0 PacWest).
As the match made its way into the second frame, ART U senior goalkeeper
Davis King extended his no goals allowed span to a total of 353 minutes of game action. Unfortunately, the streak came to an end in the 62nd minute when Austin Stafford broke the scoreless tie with an unassisted goal, his third of the season and ultimately the game-winner.
ART U generated a pair of second half shots, both of which made it on goal with one from Miller and junior midfielder
Christian Schaffner each, but the Urban Knights could not find the equalizer. Despite the goal allowed, King ended his afternoon with a pair of saves on seven shots faced.
The Urban Knights will look to rebound when they return to the pitch on Wednesday, Sept. 28 against Chaminade, with kickoff set for 12:30 p.m. HT (3:30 p.m. PT).
